Camera Obscura
Client: Camera Obscura
Designed by an architect, sculptor and photographer, the Camera Obscura is an 18 tonne sculpture designed to look like the hull of a ship and houses a camera obscura.
With views of Whangarei’s iconic Te Matau a Pohe bridge, it’s fabricated from high strength, low alloy weathering steel which has been curved into shape. The steel will naturally weather to create a patina look making painting obsolete.
This sculpture was fabricated in our Whangarei workshop and then transported to site. Getting the steel sculpture to the site involved detailed project planning and precision. The 18 tonne steel structure was floated up the Hatea river by way of pontoons and a tugboat. The structure was then lifted off the pontoon using our 100t crane and transported on our heavy haulage trailer to its final destination.
The finishing touches will be made on site ahead of the opening in November 2020.
